| BREST, FRANCE-(15-7-2003) Today is the last day of the 470 European Championship that has been dominated by difficult conditions of light shifty winds, current, and even for a few days, a lack of wind. Still, the event which is also dedicated to the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the “470 Internationale”, is not over yet. After the Pre-Europeans Andre Cornu Cup, the Championship itself, the Sprint Cup tomorrow might be the climax of the event.
The top 4 out of the Men and Women`s Gold Fleet will race each other on one race course during three races of approximately 20 minutes each. The overall winner wins an amount of 3000 Euros in cash.
One of the objectives of the event is to make the sailing sport more attractive to spectators and the sailing game understandable to non-sailors. Therefore, the races will be held very close to the shoreline with the presence of an on-the-water Television Crew and commentary of Darren Dunkley-Smith.
Another thing that is very special to this Sprint Cup is the fact that Men and Women will race each other for the first time in a true competition. There are more events where Men and Women race on the same course, like the annual ISAF Grade 2, 470 Spring Cup. Such events do not belong to the “Grand Slam” ISAF Grade 1 or World Championship events and so many teams often use such mixed events as preparation on their way to major events.
The commentary will take place on the beach, using a microphone and speakers, letting spectators on the beach of holiday beloved Bretagne enjoy the batlle of Worlds` best sailors in front of their faces.
Today again, the wind didn’t show up, keeping all sailors ashore. Most of them were anxious to take the opportunity today to improve their position on the results list and maybe gain a starting place in the Sprint Cup. The 470 European Championship has been completed. The overall results will point out the competitors to the 470 Sprint Cup. (Check the event web site www.europe470.com)
Changing weather with some rain this morning strengthens the predictions for more wind tomorrow. In favor of the high performance sailing sport, this will definitely be a great relief and possibility to gain
some spectacular images of Sprint Cup racing brought into 250 million homes by TV Broadcasting, and to all on the beach in “Open air stadium” spectators. Currently the broadcasting schedule is not available yet, but will soon be published on the web site of the Int’l 470 Class www.470.org
